The Mission
Clean Sidewalks and Trash Service (Better)
- Commit to clean, passable sidewalks through regular power washing, graffiti removal, and enforcement of existing rules requiring adjacent properties to maintain their frontage.
- Improve trash pickup reliability with scheduled collections in nightlife and beach zones, overflow bins at peak times, and rapid response crews for litter and illegal dumping.
Beach and Park Maintenance (Better)
- Protect Waikiki’s parks and beaches with daily restroom and shower cleaning, sand and turf upkeep, and quick repair of lighting, benches, bathrooms and play areas.
- Partner with visitor industry and community groups on regular “clean-up days” so residents, students, workers, and visitors all share responsibility for a well-kept shoreline.
Homelessness: Services and Standards (Better)
- Expand practical, humane responses to homelessness in Waikiki: outreach teams, shelter and treatment access, and pathways to housing and mental health care.
- Pair those services with firm standards of conduct—no camping in critical pedestrian corridors, parks kept open and safe for families, and swift action on violent or predatory behavior—so public spaces remain usable for everyone.
Housing and Cost of Living for Local Families (Stronger)
- I’m fighting for housing that local families can afford, not just more luxury condos, and for real enforcement against illegal short-term rentals that drive up prices and push residents out of their own neighborhoods.
- I’ll also stand with the hotel, hospitality, and service workers who keep Waikiki running every day, by backing targeted tax relief and strong wage protections that reflect Hawaiʻi’s true cost of living.
Responsible Tourism and Strong Local Economy (Stronger)
- Let’s lead with hospitality that respects our island communities and preserves what makes them special. By promoting responsible tourism, we can protect cultural sites, keep neighborhoods livable, and manage visitor impacts so everyone benefits.
- I believe hotels should remain the heart of visitor accommodations—places that uphold safety standards, generate local jobs, and contribute directly to our economy. When we reinvest visitor revenues into public spaces, infrastructure, and safety programs, we’re strengthening both our communities and the visitor experience alike.
Street Safety and Lighting (Safer)
- Use proven risk management methods (incident data, CLSD principles, and nighttime audits) to improve crosswalks, sightlines, and traffic calming on key Waikiki corridors.
- Modernize street and sidewalk lighting in high foot traffic areas, prioritizing late night worker routes, bus stops, and beach access paths so people feel safe after dark.
Enforcement and Late Night Security (Safer)
- Coordinate HPD, private security, and hospitality businesses to maintain high visibility late night patrols that deter disorder, street harassment, and petty crime without targeting lawful activity.
- Focus enforcement on behaviors that create risk—impaired driving, aggressive panhandling, open drug use, and sidewalk obstruction—so rules are clear and consistently applied.
Overall Commitment
- Treat Waikiki as a 24/7 neighborhood, not just a tourist district, by centering policies on the daily experience of residents and workers as well as visitors.
- Measure progress with clear metrics (crime, injuries, cleanliness complaints, satisfaction surveys) and publicly report results so the community can hold leadership accountable.
- Be accessible to constituents and the community 24/7 and maintain open communications.
